Winter, 2001, Birmingham, AL- Guitarist Drew Hall, drummer Brad Aaron, bassist Ben Herdman, and vocalist Jon Childers, brought their talents together to make a rock band that was true to their roots of classic rock, mixed with modern elements. By combining the musical chemistry of all four members,
LOCK 13 was born.
Take the technical, hard-hitting fury of the machine-like Brad Aaron, the aggressive jazzy funk of Ben Herdman, Drew Hall's precision, driving chord progressions, and driving vocal harmonies, and top it off with the extremely powerful, beautiful singing of Jon Childers. A band that delivers something new!
Between 2001 and 2004, they made various studio recordings, the first a self-produced 7-song EP, which initially got the word out on the Birmingham scene, and soon caught the attention of L.A. producer, Michael Raphael, former guitarist of Neve. At Earthtone Sounds, Raphael's Studio, the group churned out
their second
EP, which included the track "Inner Enemy", their first signature song, which established the group as a mainstay on the local scene, as well as, receiving frequent radio play from stations in Atlanta, Pensacola, Panama City, New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, Ft. Walton,
Mobile, Birmingham, Los Angeles,
and even Holland.
In late 2003, LOCK 13 was discovered by SOiL bassist Tim King. Having received the 7-song EP from a friend, he was instantly impressed by the strong song writing skills and chemistry of the band. He contacted the band and immediately began working with them on further song writing and arranging.
In Spring of 2004, King, ever-confident in the merit and versatility of the group, sent the four piece to his hometown of Chicago to work with producer Tadpole, at Rax Trax recording studio. Tadpole is legendary producer Johnny K's right hand man, working with Johnny on such projects as 3 Doors Down, Disturbed,
SOiL, Drowning Pool, Machine head, and Earshot. With Tadpole, they recorded the first three songs since hooking up with King - "Tomorrow", "Make me Hate" , and "What
I could never be". These songs proved to be the strongest material the band has written to date. The band continues to play shows both in state and out of town. The new demo is set to be sent out to radio and press for reviews as well as shopping to labels.
